San Diego Zoo. This large flock of Flamingoes is the first site that greets a visitor to the zoo.

San Diego Zoo. Animals at the zoo are kept in fairly open enclosures with nothing more than a low wall and a moat that acts as a psychological barrier to most animals. This was the first time I was back to the zoo  in 5 years and many of the enclosures have had a thin wire fence added to the tops of the wall. It seems that many of the animals have discovered it is easy to get out. Of course this now makes it very difficult to get an interesting photo especially with the Realist camera.

San Diego Zoo. Polar bears in for a swim in their new enclosure. To help add some variety to their life, the keepers will on occasion throw in different colored balls, hid raw fish and large blocks of ice.

San Diego Zoo. Polar bears in for a swim in their new enclosure. While I was shooting here another couple showed up in full camera attire. The wife went to the other side of the enclosure and acted as spotter for the husband taking pictures. They communicated over these new portable radios.

San Diego Zoo. Polar bears in for a swim in their new enclosure. By the time the crowd at the window thinned out and I got down front, the bears quit swimming.

San Diego Zoo. An Aloe plant in bloom. The zoo is actually one of the worlds largest botanical gardens with plants from all over the world. Because San Diego is an irrigated desert, they try and get plants from Australia and areas of Africa that have low water requirements.

San Diego Zoo. A Macaw preening its feathers, close enough that you can reach out and touch it - but don't!! Macaws bite!

San Diego Zoo. Old man of the Orangutan colony "Ken Allen" and the young Karen. Ken Allen is the escape artist of the group occasionally finding ways over the wall to get out and commune with the zoo visitors.

San Diego Zoo. Giant panda in a rare state of action! Ok so she is just lying on her back but she is eating.
