Chickamaugua, GA. This is one of the battlefields in this Park that has an unseen street running through the middle of it.

Select any image to view a larger version of it.

Chickamaugua has a great collection of monuments and canons.

Vicksburg, MS. Vicksburg is the best Civil War site I have visited. With its combination of statues, canons, fortifications and the USS Cairo, it has a little of everything.

This is a detail of the railroad rails that were added to the front of the USS Cairo for added protection.

In the 1960's the USS Cairo was located in the mud of the Mississippi river. It was raised and stabilized and then enshrined in this museum next to the cemetery.
The Cairo is the first ship/boat ever sunk with an electric torpedo (mine).
The museum contains many of the interesting contents that were found inside the Cairo. Personal pictures, uniforms, weapons, books, utensils, etc. provide a glimpse of the personal side of the war.
I think this is one of the best displays for a ship that I have ever seen. You can see it from below the waterline, deck level and above as shown in these pictures.
The Cairo is cradled in witness frames that provide a visual clue to the missing portions of the ship. The original timbers are used were they were available and the original canon are here as well.
Lookout Mountain above Chattanooga, TN

This view shows the Tennessee River and the city of Chattanooga.
The entrance to the park. A very step road leads to the top of this mountain or you can talk a tram up. The road to the top and the top are fully inhabited with beautiful homes and a small town.

View showing the Craven's House, part of the park.

This is why this was such an important location - the view!

This map shows the various trails that exist on the side of the mountain.
Civil War Confederate graves on the Natchez Trace.
